Laredo Border Slam-Shootout in Bordertown

Laredo Border Slam-Shootout in Bordertown

Shootout in Bordertown

LBS Hosts Regional Poetry Competition

(Laredo, TX) – For the first time Laredo BorderSlam (LBS) will host 10 teams of up to five poets from New Mexico, Louisiana and across the state of Texas for the annual SouthWest ShootOut (SWSO), a two-day regional competition, to be held in downtown Laredo from Friday, June 23 through Saturday, June 24.

"LBS has represented Laredo in this annual competition since 2012 in cities from New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma and of course our home state of Texas," LBS President Julia Orduña said. "We are excited to bring poets from the U.S. southwest region to our border town and experience our bi-cultural heritage through our numerous art forms; from the Spanish & Victorian-Age architectures in downtown Laredo to our spoken word poetry."

Teams competing are the ABQSlams (New Mexico), Austin Poetry Slam (Texas), Austin B-Sides (Texas), Eclectic Truth (Louisiana), Houston VIP (Texas), Mic Check (Texas), Puro Slam (Texas), The Rumble Room (New Mexico), Slam New Orleans (Louisiana), and Laredo BorderSlam (Texas).

Before the regional competition, LBS will kick-off the spoken word festival with their local poetry slam on Thursday, June 22 at Gallery 201, located on 513 San Bernardo Ave. in downtown Laredo.

On Friday, June 23, doors will open at 6:00 pm for SWSO team preliminaries which will take place at two venues simultaneously, Gallery 201 and Second Chance Music (406 Flores Ave.). The individual preliminaries will start at 9:00 p.m. where 16 poets will slam head-to-head for the top eight spots in the final round.

Winners advancing to Finals will compete on Saturday, June 24 at the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center on the Laredo Community College Fort McIntosh Campus. Finals for the individual slam starts at 6:30 p.m. The previous night’s top four winning teams will compete after the 2017 SWSO Individual Champion is named.

This fast-paced, word-slinging competition will leave the microphone hotter than a gun barrel after a duel in the desert heat!

Pre-sale ticket prices are $20 for an All Access Pass and $15 for Finals. Tickets can be purchased at lbs.ticketleap.com/SWSO.

"We are honored to host the first-ever large scale spoken word festival in Laredo," Orduña said. "The success of this event will dictate the ability for our organization to continue to do annual interstate events and ultimately, international events."

LBS recently received their 501(c)3 nonprofit status. Those who wish to donate or become a sponsor can contact Julia Orduña at (956) 251-8042. As a nonprofit organization, your donation is tax deductible.
